Vermont track receives $10,000 at Daytona conference

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, VT has been awarded a grant for capital improvements and facility upgrades worth $10,000 from NASCAR. Charles James "C.J." Richards, 74, of Rutland and a former resident of Fair Haven, died Thursday evening February 9, 2012, at his residence following a long illness.
He was born on July 17, 1937, in Rutland, the son of Leon and Marion (McGuire) Richards.
Mr. Richards grew up in West Haven on his family's farm where he attended local schools, graduating from the Fair Haven High School. He attended Ithaca College and Castleton State College.
He established the Champlain Valley Racing Association (CVRA) in 1960, first leasing the Fairmont Speedway in Fair Haven, then during the winter of 1966 he built the Devil's Bowl Speedway in West Haven, opening it in 1967. In 1977 he leased the Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y., prior to purchasing the track. He also owned and operated the Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh, N.Y., for many years. He was a pioneer in many aspects in the sport of racing and was one of the original founders of the Northeast NASCAR tour. Read Full Story

Drivers in four divisions racing for more than $13,000 each week

WEST HAVEN, Vt. -- Nearly one-quarter of a million dollars is up for grabs for stock car drivers competing at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in 2012. Weekly purses in the track’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Modified, Late Model, Renegade, and Bomber divisions will total more than $242,000 through 18 scheduled events from May to September. Rutland’s premier hotel will host track functions, offers Speedway discount

RUTLAND, Vt. -- The Holiday Inn Rutland/Killington, Rutland, Vermont’s premier hotel, and Devil’s Bowl Speedway in nearby West Haven, VT, have announced a partnership for the 2012 stock car racing season. The Holiday Inn Rutland/Killington is the Official Hotel of Devil’s Bowl Speedway, a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track.
The Holiday Inn Rutland/Killington is already familiar to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway community, having hosted competition meetings in October and January and a November press conference. The hotel will host additional functions in 2012 including a season-ending awards banquet. In addition, visiting fans and racers will enjoy a discounted room rate by mentioning Devil’s Bowl Speedway. OLMSTEDVILLE, N.Y. -- Think back to the time when you were seventeen-years-old. There are many memories that were made during that time. Movies with friends, chasing that crush, attending parties, and working a night and weekend job might be some of the activities that come to mind. And Jessey Mueller is not unlike any other seventeen year old in that aspect.
"I try to fit that in somewhere," jokes Mueller.
But Mueller is a race winning NASCAR Modified driver, and has his sights set on winning top tiered Modified division championships. Not many seventeen-year-old kids can say that. Read Full Story
